Quote:
Israel and Palestinians seek quick "understandings"

A snipit: Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday, hoping to cap his scandal-plagued leadership of Israel with a document of peace understandings within the next two weeks, officials said. . . .

A senior Abbas aide said Rice had proposed several bridging proposals during her 25-hour visit last week and they would be discussed at the Olmert-Abbas meeting in Jerusalem.

They included working out a territorial swap and basing the borders of a future Palestinian state on lines that existed before Israel captured the West Bank in a 1967 war, while taking into account several major Jewish settlement blocs.

The issue of Jerusalem would be resolved as part of the borders debate but religious sites and the walled Old City where they are located would be discussed at a later stage, the aide said.

On the fate of Palestinian refugees, the aide said the United States would work internationally to provide them with compensation and discussions would begin on deciding how many could return to what is now Israel.

There was no immediate Israeli or U.S. comment on the aide's remarks.

Israel's Haaretz newspaper said Olmert may propose international oversight for talks aimed at resolving the dispute over Jerusalem. Israel considers all of Jerusalem its capital, a claim that has not won international recognition. Palestinians want Arab East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

Quote:
Palestinians reject partial peace accord
Abbas insists any deal create a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as capital

JERUSALEM - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas rejected Israel's idea of an interim peace agreement at a Sunday summit, a Palestinian negotiator said, insisting on an all-or-nothing approach that virtually ruled out an accord by a January target date.

The latest meeting between Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was their shortest, lasting less than an hour. Neither side pointed to progress.

Olmert entered the meeting in a weakened position after his decision to submit his resignation this month when his party picks a new leader. Just two days before Abbas arrived for talks at Olmert's residence Sunday, Israeli police passed through the same entrance to interrogate Olmert for the seventh time in a series of corruption cases...

Trio of storms stirs up Atlantic

Story Highlights
* Florida governor issues state of emergency for Hanna
* Ike, Josephine in line behind Hanna in Atlantic
* Ten Haitians reported killed by Hanna, AP says
* At least one death in Puerto Rico attributed to Hanna, AP reports

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Tropical Storm Hanna, the first of three tropical storms lined up across the Atlantic, was expected to make landfall somewhere from Florida to North Carolina before Friday evening, forecasters said.

Hanna could come ashore as a Category 1 hurricane, with winds of 80 to 85 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist declared a state of emergency Tuesday to get the state ready for Hanna, The Associated Press reported. Florida could get flash floods and wind gusts of up to 111 mph, he said.

At 8 p.m. ET, Hanna was 65 miles (105 kilometers) southeast of Great Inagua Island in the Bahamas, the hurricane center said. It was moving slowly toward the east but was expected to strengthen and move to toward the northwest on Wednesday. Video Watch what Florida is doing to prepare »

Hanna's maximum sustained winds were 65 mph (100 kph).

Following Hanna is Tropical Storm Ike, which formed Monday, and is forecast to cross into the Caribbean as a hurricane on Saturday or Sunday. Ike is heading toward the Caribbean at 17 mph with top wind speeds of 65 mph, the hurricane center said at 5 p.m. ET.

Ike is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane Tuesday and could strike the Turks and Caicos islands just south of the Bahamas by Sunday. iReport.com: Watch Hanna lash Turks and Caicos Islands

Behind Ike is Tropical Storm Josephine, which formed Tuesday with top winds near 50 mph, the hurricane center said at 5 p.m. ET. Josephine is about 125 miles (205 kilometers) southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands off the coast of western Africa...

Wind farm construction delayed by wind

BERLIN, Germany (AP) -- Violent weather has delayed construction on Germany's first offshore wind farm, a consortium of companies planning the project said Thursday.

The plan was to place the first three foundations -- each weighing 700 tons and standing some 147 feet high -- by the first week of September.

But the wind they hope eventually to reap is causing construction setbacks, and ocean waves are cresting too high.

"We've had a really, really shocking summer," said Jonny Stokes, a spokesman for E.ON AG, one of three energy companies partnering in the project. Vattenfall Europe and RWE are the two other participants...

Landslide kills 34 in Shanxi, China

(CNN) -- Thirty-four people have been killed after a mud and rock slide caused a warehouse in north China to collapse, China's state-run news agency reported Tuesday.

Torrential rain caused the slide at about 8 a.m. Monday near the warehouse in China's Shanxi Province, the Xinhua new agency reported, quoting rescue workers.

Witnesses said the flow of rocks and mud roared down a valley, the agency said.

The deluge also destroyed a three -story office building, a market and some villagers' homes in the valley. Thirty-five people were injured, the agency reported.

More than 1,100 police, firefighters and others were part of the search effort, the agency reported.
