I was looking at Jeff Benner's 'ancient hebrew' books the other day, and became facinated by some of the proto Hebrew forms he presents taking as an example the two 'constituents of Adam (the man) 'dust' and 'Neshamah' (I am not very happy with the translation of Neshamah as 'conscience')

Shmah in biblical Hebrew has two distinct tranches of meaning, first is ‘to hear’ the other is ‘to guard’ neither of these really does the word justice.

YHWH spoke the creation into existence using Hebrew, it is a language with roots deep in YHWH’s spiritual realm. It is thus difficult for us to understand in the physical realm. Modern Hebrew (Ivrit) is a physical language but biblical Hebrew is something different. Early Hebrew was a ‘pictorial’ language that conveyed both speech rendered in written form, and a picture of that meaning. So if we take 'Shin' (two front teeth – eat or devour) and 'mem' (waves of water – mighty, unstoppable seas flowing to and fro, also wine, blood or liquid).

Put together the two imply ‘breath’ or ‘character’ (of a person, in this case of YHWH) giving ‘name’ where name reflects a description of the persona, and in the Edenic context, that (breath) which flows to and from the ‘ Tree of Life’ (Yehushua).

Nun gives us the ‘seed’ which is perpetuation of life. Put together as 'neshamah' we get a perpetual contact with the Tree of Life. So when the fall happens we lose the nun, the ‘perpetual’ contact now becomes ‘temporal’ and is terminated by death.

Analysing ‘dust’ in the same way, the Hebrew word is 'adam'. 'Aleph' is the ox head and signifies strength, 'dalet' is the tent door, and mem (see above). Aleph Dalet put together is ‘smoke’ (The fire was at the tent door). Smoke is also dust/ash held in suspension by ‘wind’ (breath). Mem adds the blood, 'dalet' and 'mem' together implying the flowing of blood. When the ‘blood’ stops flowing, man dies and reverts to smoke/ash.

Even at this early stage we have the blood soaked (tent) door/portal of pesach.

'Knowledge' in the Hebrew form da'at (from Yada) is 'dalet' 'ayin'

At the time of the fall serpent tells Chavah that our ‘eyes will be open’, so, in adam (dust), 'dalet' 'mem' goes to daled ayin (ayin is the eye) which is ’one who learns from what he sees’ (Da’th –‘ knowledge’) note the ’physical’ aspect here where the seeing is a physical sense.

Adam, the man is now a purely physical being.
