Twice now I have come across historical pieces which posit that 'Islam' was invited by the Roman Church to invade North Africa around 700 AD. Does anyone have any information on this?

The North African believers had not taken on the wholesale paganism of Rome and were quite possibly 'Yehudim' and as such were a thorn in the side of Augustine and Rome.

They were massacred by the Muslim Brigand so there is little information...

I don't have any info off the top of my head, but I find highly unlikely.

The appendix of POD, Islam's Dark Past, is full of historical information on Islam's origins. That would probably be your best place to start.
