How could a Torah observant person have a garage/yard sale in North America?

(By article 4, section 6 of the US Constitution, garage sales are to be conducted on Saturday mornings.)

A Garage Sale is not part of my ordinary work, so having one would not be a violation of the Sabbath. Also I could do it on Sunday and ignore the constitution, everyone else does.

Disagree. I'm pretty sure the Sabbath instruction basically forbids any sort of exchange-of-goods business of any kind, be it money for an item, or another item for an item.

You could have a "Garage/Yard Give away" on a Saturday morning, but I think that negates the point :)

I stand corrected. Still Sunday is free. And I'm with Walt, didn't really think about it until he said something, but nowhere does the Constitution say anything about yard sales. And again no one listens to it anyway, so why listen to it there.

Having it on Sun-day would be a nice way to confirm which of your neighbors aren't in "church".

I believe Ed's Constitution quote was just a little tongue in cheek. I am pretty sure that there weren't any garages at the time the founding fathers were founding.

But I am curious as to how the rant started?? Ed...
“Because he clings to Me, is joined to Me, loves and delights in Me, desires Me, therefore I will deliver him, carry him safely away, cause him to escape from harm making him inaccessible and strong, and delivering him safely to heaven, because he has known, observed, cared for, recognized, instructed and advised others to use, designated, acknowledged, discerned, answered in, My name, authority, character, report, mark, and nature." Indeed, mine is a marginal reading of the text.

We have a bunch of stuff in our garage that has to go, and we are taking commandment number four seriously. Hence the question.

I didn't mean for it to sound like a rant. I've got plenty of those. For instance: How ARE we supposed to fold "fitted' bed sheets?

Seriously, we need to have a garage sale and live in a 'roman' culture that wants us to have it on Saturn-day morning.

Can't we buy an indulgence or something?

(Walt, that was a joke!)

Ed, unfortunately I don't have any inspired guidance for you but wonder if this might fall into the category of what Yahshua said about rescuing your animal on Shabbat?

Ed,

Where I live, garage sales start on Friday and go through Saturday. So maybe you could have it on Friday until sunset. Or you could really make a statement and it would be a chance to witness if you had it on Friday and Sunday, but not Saturday.

This is simple Ed, Ebay! You can sell anything there, anytime. Or if you really need to get rid of it, take it to helping hands.

Good question ;)

My advise is to have the garage sale on Sunday, and stick up a sign board saying "Scripture forbids (or Yahweh doesn't want) me to sell on the Sabbath, so I'm having my garage sale today!" Or a catchy phrase with some Ed-humour in it ;)

But like James said, if you got access to EBay then use it.

Why? Is Saturday America's national Weed-smoking day?

:P

Looking around I don't think most of the people here need a day dedicated to letting them smoke it. They do it all the time.

OK my sign should have read.Warning!!! Anyone Who Shows Up On Saturday Shall Be Put To Death
Exodus 31:14
14 You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people.

So let's put a Rabbinical twist to the situation: what does it mean to "show up?" Will a person be stoned for just stopping the car and taking a quick peep over the fence, or by picking up an object and smelling it, or maybe even by going as far as trying to hand over cash? Will Ed be stoned for tempting people to buy on the Sabbath?
