I could use some help with this verse, anyone who has experience with Hebrew. מִן־הָאָרֶץ הַהִוא יָצָא אַשּׁוּר וַיִּבֶן אֶת־נִינְוֵה וְאֶת־רְחֹבֹת עִיר וְאֶת־כָּלַח
The way I see it there are two possible renderings, but I have issues with both. It is either saying that: from the land Asshur went forth building ... Or that: he (Nimrod) went forth to Asshur/Assyria building ...
The second seems to be good, in that Asshur hasn't been introduced at this point in the story, but on the con, their would be no Assyria prior to Asshur, but it could just mean that he went to the are that would one day be Assyria. My biggest problem with this rendering is that there is no basis for the word to.
The first one has the issue that Asshur was not introduced at this point, so he comes out of nowhere. Asshur is established a son of Shem a few verses latter.
a literal rendering is from the land the that went forth asshur ....
that could mean he she etc.
most translations render it either from that land asshur went forth, or from that land he went forth to Assyria.
I'm leaning toward From the land he Asshur went forth ....
But I wanted to see if anyone had any incites that I might be missing.
