Continuing its efforts to address a practice some members call "a stain on the church," the Episcopal Church will hold a "Day of Repentance" to publicly apologize for its involvement in the slave trade.

Catholic school falls in love with year-round calendar
By Scott Stephens

CLEVELAND -- The 280 students at Mount Carmel Parish School, from preschool through eighth grade, attend classes the same number of days as students at any other school. But instead of a long summer recess, they have four shorter breaks each season. The year-round schedule, one of some 3,000 schools nationwide, is a radical departure from the still-dominant agrarian-based school schedule from the 19th century that was designed to give children the summer off so they could help in the fields.

COMMENTARY: China, the Olympics and the Bible
By Dick Staub

"Everything you can say about China is true ... somewhere in China!" Such was the insight offered by my 90-year-old friend, Rosa, who with her sister, the late Ruth Graham Bell (Billy Graham's wife), was raised in China. The observation is timely and useful as the Olympics are upon us and we Westerners are trying to understand the enigma that is China. Nowhere are words more important, and the Chinese more enigmatic, than on the issue of religion and the Bible.

Shabbat Shalom,

Isn't the above article taking it a little too literal to have the pneuma blow into your homes? Hope that their egos don't get deflated if they fail to draw the crowds into their confessionals...

Here's one quote from the article:

Shalom,

He would have done better if he has put in a simple "a" before "loving religion" but best if he had said that people should love God and each other in spite of religion.

Buddhism gets political, sometimes violent, over Tibet
By Lucky Severson

All eyes are on China as it plays host to the 2008 Olympic games, and for the moment, earlier unrest over China's treatment of Tibet has largely moved off center stage -- much to Beijing's relief.

Yet the decades-long tussle over Tibet continues to color the games, and some wonder what will happen after the Olympic torch is extinguished and the world goes home. Will the games have done anything to soften China's approach to Tibet?

The run-up to the games made many nervous...

How would Jesus vote?

Tired of being erroneously sighted on pancakes and seeing his mother reduced to appearances on greasy servings of comfort food, Jesus has (finally) endorsed a candidate in Utah's 3rd congressional district.

Television reporter-turned state Sen. Bennion http://www.bennionspence...dex.asp">Spencer told the Salt Lake Tribune recently that if it was up to Jesus, he'd be the choice to replace Rep. Chris Cannon.

His comments triggered an escalating series of attacks in the fightin' third, with both Spencer and his opponent Jason Chaffetz (a former kicker at BYU) accusing the other of being "sacrilegious." Read the full story here.

Interestingly enough, the top endorsement listed on Spencer's website come from "legendary anchor Dick Nourse." More legendary than Jesus?

Could it be that they do not have the Shalom of Yahweh in hearts when they congregate on the day of the Sun and follow Mithraic traditions? These people need to be led in the right direction and their pastors are doing a very poor job.

Megachurch reflects on presidential event
By David Finnigan

LAKE FOREST, Calif. -- A day after hosting presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain, megachurch pastor Rick Warren said Sunday (Aug. 17) that a politician's soul is as important as his solutions.

"Don't just look at issues, look at character," Warren sermonized here at his Saddleback Church. "Issues are important but you also have to look at character."

The megachurch pastor made only a passing reference to his "buddies named Barack and John," but he made clear what he looks for in a leader.

"Our leaders used to be known for the integrity ... `Honest Abe' or George Washington," Warren said. "Does the private life of a leader matter? Absolutely it matters. Because what you do affects everybody else, even in your private life."

On Saturday night Warren and Saddleback hosted a "civil forum" with Republican presumptive nominee McCain and Obama, the presumed Democratic nominee. It was this presidential campaign's third faith-focused forum -- the first two included only Democratic nominees -- highlighting the importance religion has assumed in recent elections...

Saddleback-gate

Did John McCain know ahead of time what questions he'd be asked at Saturday' Saddleback forum?

The internets are buzzing this morning over reports that the Arizona senator may not have actually been in a "cone of silence" while the Rev. Rick Warren interviewed Barack Obama. Both candidates were asked identical questions, but Obama went first after a coin-flip.

The New York Times reports that McCain was en route to the event in his motorcade during the first round of questioning-a fact that came as a surprise to Warren on Sunday. Read the full story here.
Whether or not McCain could have benefited from advance knowledge is unclear, as the forum could at times have just as easily doubled as an interview for an entry-level managerial position at the neighborhood Popeye's franchise (for example, "What's the most gut-wrenching decisions you've ever had to make?")

But at the very least, it gives us an excuse to bring back this "debate-gate" of yester-year, which remains the most exciting thing ever to happen at a presidential debate.

Democrats woo faith voters with small steps on abortion
By Jeff Diamant

In the history of abortion politics, it was a key event: the 1992 move by Democrats to deny Pennsylvania Gov. Robert Casey Sr., an opponent of abortion rights, a speaking spot at the party's national convention that year. Bill Clinton, of course, won that presidential election, but the move barring Casey, a Democrat who hadn't endorsed Clinton, is widely seen as having alienated millions of religious abortion opponents who felt the party no longer had a place for them. This year the party is trying to change that perception, in line with other attempts to woo religious voters who in recent years have voted Republican by large margins. Casey's like-minded son, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey Jr., D-Pa., an early supporter of presumptive nominee Barack Obama, is being given a speaking slot at the upcoming Democratic National Convention. And the party's platform committee last week approved language that some liberal opponents of abortion say could draw back at least some of the alienated.

The caption on the photo below reads: "METHODIST MEMBERS Rebecca Farnum reacts to a vote that maintained the United Methodist Church's standards on homosexuality during the General Conference in Fort Worth, Texas. The place of gay and lesbian parishioners has been the subtext to a broader discussion on who can be admitted to membership in the denomination. Strang drops DNC benediction plans

There's been an update since we blogged about the announced lineup of people giving invocations and benedictions at next week's Democratic National Convention. Cameron Strang, editor of Relevant magazine, has decided not to give the benediction on Monday after all, OrlandoSentinel.com reports.

"If my praying at the DNC was perceived as showing favoritism and incorrectly labeling me as endorsing one candidate over the other, then I need to have pause,'' Strang said.

Convention staff confirmed the change of plans and said author Don Miller will replace him. ChristianityToday.com has covered the developments, too, noting that Miller is most known for his book, "Blue Like Jazz: Nonreligious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality."

Comeback crusaders

Now even the Vatican's official newspaper is proclaiming the innocence of the Knights Templar. Maybe Pope Benedict is preparing to settle?

Catholic politicians and abortion (cont’d)

If anyone thought that moving to the Vatican would silence former St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke on the abortion-Communion question ... it hasn't.

N.J. court says conversations with pastors not always privileged
By Kate Coscarelli

A conversation with a religious leader is not protected from being revealed in court unless it occurred in private and the leader was acting as a spiritual adviser, a New Jersey appeals court ruled Wednesday (Aug. 20).

COMMENTARY: The futile search for Billy Graham’s successor
By Dick Staub

(UNDATED) Having spent his life in the limelight, Billy Graham's final days are being lived out at his mountain retreat in relative seclusion, while down below there is a clamor to crown his successor. The very diversity, and frankly incompatibility, of the names mentioned thus far raise an important question: Just what are the qualifications for Billy's successor? Certainly Graham's most basic identifier is as an evangelist, a preacher of the good news. He's a genuine cultural media celebrity, the "president's pastor," and a global statesman welcomed by heads of state. But who wants this "next Billy Graham" anyway? It seems a sad commentary on a culture when the best it can hope for is a new version of someone who fit the unique needs of a previous culture. Graham himself was more interested in perpetuating a brighter future than in a nostalgia for the past.

Is voting a Christian rite or right?
By Tim Murphy

Jason Ford, 29, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., will be spending Election Day at home this year.

A self-identified evangelical Christian, Ford cast his vote for President Bush in 2004, but says he and his wife plan to stay away from the polls Nov. 4, rather than vote for Sen. John McCain.

"I'm not going to be able to vote for anyone who doesn't take a 100-percent stand against abortion," said Ford, "so right now I'm in a dilemma."

Ford is concerned by McCain's support for embryonic stem cell research, as well as reports that the Arizona senator may choose a running mate who supports abortion rights, such as Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.

"If he's OK with that, then I'm not," Ford said.

Ford is not alone. Lou Engle, founder of the evangelical youth movement, TheCall, says he may sit out the election if McCain selects a pro-choice running mate. Meanwhile, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, a leading conservative Christian voice, publicly vowed never to support McCain in February. He softened his stance recently...

Catholic Biden draws praise and criticism from faithful
By Adelle M. Banks

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Joseph Biden's new role as vice presidential running mate immediately revives a debate over whether Catholic politicians who support abortion rights should receive Communion. The senator chosen by Democratic candidate Sen. Barack Obama regularly attends a Greenville, Del., Catholic church and -- while disagreeing with his church's stance on abortion -- is known for supporting other key tenets of the Catholic faith. "He's very committed to helping working-class folks and poor people, and that's what Catholic social teaching is all about," said the Rev. Thomas Reese, senior fellow of the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University in Washington.

Wife blasted for keeping Edwards affair secret

RALEIGH, North Carolina (AP) -- Two weeks after a devastating revelation sent her husband into political exile, Elizabeth Edwards isn't getting the steady sympathy usually afforded to a woman scorned.

nstead, she's faced criticism from dedicated Democrats who think she was too willing to keep the affair a secret to help John Edwards' political ambitions, as well as her own.

At a time when she was expected to hold a prominent role in pushing an agenda of improved health care for Americans, she stands silent. While fellow Democrats converge in Denver, Colorado, to nominate Barack Obama for president, Edwards remains in seclusion in North Carolina.

It seems an odd way to treat a woman with incurable cancer wronged by a cheating husband, the latest in a series of deep hardships in life that includes the death of a teenage son.

But some former followers have questioned the recklessness of keeping the affair under wraps even though her husband -- a former U.S. senator, two-time presidential candidate and the 2004 vice presidential nominee -- said he confessed the affair in 2006, before the campaign began in earnest the next year.

"I think she's complicit," said Brad Crone, a Raleigh-based Democratic consultant. "Obviously, she knew. While she's the victim, she clearly didn't stand in the way of the cover-up."

Young Muslims getting the word out about faith
By Charles Honey

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- From their cramped office behind a barber shop, four young men are trying to get the word out: This is who we are, this is what we believe. As Muslims in an overwhelmingly Christian community, they see it as their responsibility to tell what Islam truly teaches -- to non-Muslims and other Muslims. They aim to do so through Sunnah Publishing, an educational nonprofit they formed four years ago. Hamza Kantarevic knows he looks exotic, and perhaps threatening, in conservative West Michigan. He and his colleagues at Sunnah Publishing hope to answer questions at their first public conference, "Islam in America," beginning Friday, a few days before Ramadan begins. The seminar features Muslim scholars from Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and New Jersey addressing a wide array of topics, from what Islam teaches about violence and women to Muslim positions on intelligent design and the environment.
