I wondered if anyone with better and more varied sources than I now hold could check the veracity of this translation:

The text of the earliest Greek manuscripts (pre 4th century) reads: θς χρς---"nomina sacra" abbreviations, I believe, for Theos Christos = God (the) Christ/Messiah/Anointed. (Please verify my Greek, Swalchy). Interestingly, the post Constantine text replaces this with Kurios (= Lord). Very peculiar. And disturbing.
