I am wondering if anyone knows how much King Dowd paid for the threshing floor? We don't have a family translation. So I have no option other than a Bible.

2 Samuel 24:24 says 50 Shekels of Silver, while 1 Chronicles says 600 shekels of Gold! This is a huge difference!

I would imagine a Shekel of weight for Silver would be the same for Gold and the value of Gold is always more than Silver!

Hmmm, This has me a little perplexed!

Hi Stewart,

Perhaps there were two separate threshing floors. Both 2 Samuel and 1 Chronicles tell about the census and David’s poor choice of the pestilence upon the land. In 2 Samuel he buys a threshing floor from Araunah for 50 shekels of silver but in 1 Chronicles he buys a threshing floor from Ornan for 600 shekels of gold. Now the question is, are Araunah and Ornan the same guy? I think not, in 2 Chronicles 3:1 Solomon builds the Temple on the threshing floor of Ornan. Araunah is only mentioned in 2 Samuel.

Since it never really says what happened to the threshing floor of Araunah other than David built an alter. My theory is that there were two separate threshing floors. We know that Ornan’s was bought at full price of 600 shekels of gold because it was the sight of the future Temple. 6 is the number of man but gold represents purity and set-apartness. Everything inside of the Tabernacle was made of gold or gold plated wood.

I don’t have any written proof but I think that Araunah’s threshing floor became David’s personal alter. They have found an alter in the City of David in Jerusalem that they think was David’s personal alter. 50 is the number of jubilee when all debts are forgiven and silver is the metal of redemption. Silver was used for the court curtain pillars of the Tabernacle.

Perhaps Araunah’s threshing floor was used to make atonement for David himself and Ornan’s threshing floor was used to make atonement for the people.

Exchange rates for gold and silver have varied wildly over time. One question is what was the exchange rate between gold and silver at the time? In ancient Egypt silver was more valuable than gold because there were no silver mines in Egypt. It is believed that at the period of David the exchange rate was 1 gold = 4 silver. Today the exchange rate is about 1 gold = 83 silver.

2Sa 24:22 And AraunahH728 saidH559 untoH413 David,H1732 Let my lordH113 the kingH4428 takeH3947 and offer upH5927 what seemeth goodH2896 unto him:H5869 behold,H7200 here be oxenH1241 for burnt sacrifice,H5930 and threshing instrumentsH4173 and other instrumentsH3627 of the oxenH1241 for wood.H6086
2Sa 24:23 AllH3605 these things did Araunah,H728 as a king,H4428 giveH5414 untoH413 the king.H4428 And AraunahH728 saidH559 unto the king,H4428 The LORDH3068 thy GodH430 acceptH7521 thee.
2Sa 24:24 And the kingH4428 saidH559 untoH413 Araunah,H728 Nay;H3808 butH3588 I will surely buyH7069 H7069 it ofH4480 H854 thee at a price:H4242 neitherH3808 will I offerH5927 burnt offeringsH5930 unto the LORDH3068 my GodH430 of that whichH834 doth cost me nothing.H2600 So DavidH1732 boughtH7069 (H853) the threshingfloorH1637 and the oxenH1241 for fiftyH2572 shekelsH8255 of silver.H3701
2Sa 24:25 And DavidH1732 builtH1129 thereH8033 an altarH4196 unto the LORD,H3068 and offeredH5927 burnt offeringsH5930 and peace offerings.H8002 So the LORDH3068 was intreatedH6279 for the land,H776 and the plagueH4046 was stayedH6113 fromH4480 H5921 Israel.H3478

1Ch 21:18 Then the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 commandedH559 H413 GadH1410 to sayH559 to David,H1732 thatH3588 DavidH1732 should go up,H5927 and set upH6965 an altarH4196 unto the LORDH3068 in the threshingfloorH1637 of OrnanH771 the Jebusite.H2983
1Ch 21:19 And DavidH1732 went upH5927 at the sayingH1697 of Gad,H1410 whichH834 he spakeH1696 in the nameH8034 of the LORD.H3068
1Ch 21:20 And OrnanH771 turned back,H7725 and sawH7200 (H853) the angel;H4397 and his fourH702 sonsH1121 withH5973 him hid themselves.H2244 Now OrnanH771 was threshingH1758 wheat.H2406
1Ch 21:21 And as DavidH1732 cameH935 toH5704 Ornan,H771 OrnanH771 lookedH5027 and sawH7200 (H853) David,H1732 and went outH3318 ofH4480 the threshingfloor,H1637 and bowed himselfH7812 to DavidH1732 with his faceH639 to the ground.H776
1Ch 21:22 Then DavidH1732 saidH559 toH413 Ornan,H771 GrantH5414 me the placeH4725 of this threshingfloor,H1637 that I may buildH1129 an altarH4196 therein unto the LORD:H3068 thou shalt grantH5414 it me for the fullH4392 price:H3701 that the plagueH4046 may be stayedH6113 fromH4480 H5921 the people.H5971
1Ch 21:23 And OrnanH771 saidH559 untoH413 David,H1732 TakeH3947 it to thee, and let my lordH113 the kingH4428 doH6213 that which is goodH2896 in his eyes:H5869 lo,H7200 I giveH5414 thee the oxenH1241 also for burnt offerings,H5930 and the threshing instrumentsH4173 for wood,H6086 and the wheatH2406 for the meat offering;H4503 I giveH5414 it all.H3605
1Ch 21:24 And kingH4428 DavidH1732 saidH559 to Ornan,H771 Nay;H3808 butH3588 I will verily buyH7069 H7069 it for the fullH4392 price:H3701 forH3588 I will notH3808 takeH5375 that whichH834 is thine for the LORD,H3068 nor offerH5927 burnt offeringsH5930 without cost.H2600
1Ch 21:25 So DavidH1732 gaveH5414 to OrnanH771 for the placeH4725 sixH8337 hundredH3967 shekelsH8255 of goldH2091 by weight.H4948
1Ch 21:26 And DavidH1732 builtH1129 thereH8033 an altarH4196 unto the LORD,H3068 and offeredH5927 burnt offeringsH5930 and peace offerings,H8002 and calledH7121 uponH413 the LORD;H3068 and he answeredH6030 him fromH4480 heavenH8064 by fireH784 uponH5921 the altarH4196 of burnt offering.H5930
1Ch 21:27 And the LORDH3068 commandedH559 the angel;H4397 and he put up his sword againH7725 H2719 intoH413 the sheathH5084 thereof.
1Ch 21:28 At thatH1931 timeH6256 when DavidH1732 sawH7200 thatH3588 the LORDH3068 had answeredH6030 him in the threshingfloorH1637 of OrnanH771 the Jebusite,H2983 then he sacrificedH2076 there.H8033
1Ch 21:29 For the tabernacleH4908 of the LORD,H3068 whichH834 MosesH4872 madeH6213 in the wilderness,H4057 and the altarH4196 of the burnt offering,H5930 were at thatH1931 seasonH6256 in the high placeH1116 at Gibeon.H1391
1Ch 21:30 But DavidH1732 couldH3201 notH3808 goH1980 beforeH6440 it to enquireH1875 of God:H430 forH3588 he was afraidH1204 becauseH4480 H6440 of the swordH2719 of the angelH4397 of the LORD.H3068

2Ch 3:1 Then SolomonH8010 beganH2490 to buildH1129 (H853) the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 at JerusalemH3389 in mountH2022 Moriah,H4179 whereH834 the LORD appearedH7200 unto DavidH1732 his father,H1 in the placeH4725 thatH834 DavidH1732 had preparedH3559 in the threshingfloorH1637 of OrnanH771 the Jebusite.H2983

One point to consider is the variety of weights to determine a shekel too, this varied considerably!

As with many ancient units, the shekel had a variety of values depending on era, government and region; weights between 7 and 17 grams and values of 11, 14, and 17 grams are common.

So a shekel of anything can vary tremendously and considering the values between Gold and Siver if they are measured in the same weight and scale!

Interesting ideas you have and up to this point in time, I have not come to any major conclusions. It's just one of those little mysteries that as and when time permits, I want to clear up!

Thank you for your input!
