I wouldn't mind staying OpenSource. If this forum software was replaced, which I know isn't even really on the table, I think FUDforum would be a good replacement.

I have admin experience with message boards using Invision Power Board software. I would be happy to help with the board or take a look. Have you ever thought of installing a shout box at the top of the forum so people could talk in real time? I offer because I know there are some issues with the board that might cause members to be less active.
