I have been studying Hebrew. Studying nouns, there are masculine and feminine nouns and usually the masculine plural ends with –im (yod-mem) and feminine plural ends with –ot (waw-taw). But there are irregular plural endings where masculine nouns have the feminine plural ending –ot, and also feminine nouns with the masculine plural –im ending (but not as many).
The first masculine noun with an irregular plural ending that I ran into was ab (father) but fathers is abot. Why is this I wonder? Is it just a coincidence? Does it roll off of the tongue easier?
The only thing that I could think of is maybe it is this way because really there is only one true father and he is Yahowah. When fathers has the feminine -ot ending, to me, it is like saying these other earthly fathers aren’t really true fathers.
Singular Plural Definition Strong’s # אב אבות father H1
Some other examples of this phenomenon are:
שולחן שולחנות table H7979 There is only one table, the table of show bread.
שם שמות name H8034 There is only one true name: Yahowah. Only one name matters.
קול קולות voice, sound H6963 There is only one true voice, Yahowah’s.
משכן משכנות tabernacle H4908 There is only one true tabernacle.
היכל היכלות temple H1964 There is only one true temple.
גרן גרנות threshing floor H1637 There is only one true threshing floor.
ארון ארונות ark H727 There is only one ark, the ark of the covenant.
אריה אריות lion H738 There is only one lion, the lion of the tribe of Yahudah.
This one has a negative connotation:
משמר משמרות prison H4929 There is only one prison, Sheol?
Feminine nouns with irregular plural –im (yod-mem) endings:
בורה דברים Bee / Deborah H1683. There is only one prophet / judge named Deborah.
יונה יונים Dove / Yonah H3123 / H3124 There is only one prophet named Yonah.
חטּה חטים Wheat H2406 There is only one firstfruits of the wheat harvest (Shabuwa).
שׂער שׂערים Barley H8184 There is only one firstfruits of the barley harvest (Bikuwrym).
Why do you guys think that there are masculine nouns with feminine plural –ot endings? Why do you guys think that there are feminine nouns with masculine plural –im endings?
